Excel Tips And Tricks : Convert Text To Numbers

Occasionally when you import or copy data into an Excel spreadsheet, the numbers
that come in are formatted as text, not as a number. Because the numbers are
formatted as text, these "Text Values" can't be sorted as a number or used in
formulas.
To convert these text values to numbers:
1. Click a blank cell in the worksheet.
2. Verify the cell is formatted as a number.
a. Right-click in the cell.
b. Click Format Cells…
c. In the Category: field highlight Number.
d. Click OK.
3. Type 1 in the cell.
4. Press Enter.
5. Click back into the cell where
you had just typed the '1'.

6. In the menubar, click
Copy/Edit.
7. Now select the Text Value
Cells you want to convert to
numbers.
8. In the menubar, click
Edit/Paste Special…
9. In the Paste section, select
Values and number formats.
10. In the Operation section,
select Multiply.
11. Click the OK button.
The selection is now converted to numbers.
